A Variational Formulation of the MHD Induction Equation
We present a variational formulation of the induction equation in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) based on Gauss's principle of least constraint. The central result is the Euler--Lagrange equation $\mathbf{Z}_B = -\nabla h_m$, where $h_m = \mathbf{A}\cdot\mathbf{B}$ is the magnetic helicity density. This
