The Coherence Threshold and Laminar Causal Flow

Consciousness is proposed as a dynamical regime in which causal propagation organizes into stable trajectories that preserve and carry forward prior states. The central condition governing this regime is the ratio between internal stabilization and environmental disruption. Let λ_self denote the rate at which a system restores and propagates its own structure, and λ_env denote the rate at which environmental interaction perturbs that structure. When λ_self / λ_env exceeds a critical threshold R★, the system enters a regime in which its evolution is governed primarily by internally generated dynamics. Within this regime, causal influence propagates along coherent trajectories that remain locally aligned and resist dispersion. Prior states are not lost but are carried forward within these pathways, where they remain available for ongoing interaction. This organization supports recursive closure, in which the system’s present dynamics are continuously informed by its own recent past. Internal reflection arises as the re-encounter of preserved states within the same causal flow, enabling the integration of prior and current activity. Temporal structure emerges from the ordered persistence of influence across successive states. The present is not an instantaneous event but an extended process in which retained structure remains active. Recognition corresponds to the alignment of propagated patterns within this ongoing flow, and meaning arises from the progressive integration of partially coherent structures. Information, memory, and processing are unified as aspects of structured propagation within stable trajectories. This framework applies across physical, biological, neural, and cognitive systems wherever internal stabilization supports sustained propagation. Empirically, the regime is associated with temporal coherence, bounded divergence of trajectories, and the continued contribution of prior states to present dynamics. Consciousness corresponds to the operation of a system within this regime, where internally sustained causal flow produces a coherent interior in which past and present are continuously integrated.
