The Philosophical Lunch: A Training Method for Philosophical Practitioners (English version)
This paper proposes the Philosophical Lunch as a pedagogical instrument for the training of philosophical practitioners, in complement — and, in certain respects, in structural contrast — with the established café philo. The café philo, since its Parisian inception in the early 1990s, has served philosophical practice admirably as a tool of public outreach; its merits on that terrain are not in dispute. Its limitations, however, emerge when it is asked to perform a second task for which it was not designed: the training of practitioners themselves. In that role its frontal, one-to-many geometry reproduces a structurally monarchic arrangement that prevents the trainee from acquiring the lateral, catalytic dispositions that philosophical consulting demands. The Philosophical Lunch responds to this specific pedagogical gap by redistributing facilitative authority across a network of small tables — each a micro-polis of hermeneutic encounter — where the shared meal, the fixed menu, and the synchronous rhythm of courses together constitute the material scaffolding of Habermasian symmetry and Gadamerian horizon-fusion. Drawing on Max Black's interaction theory of metaphor and on the Italian tradition of consulenza filosofica, the paper argues that commensality is not a logistical convenience but an ergonomic precondition of the dialogical training it makes possible.
