It represents the most comprehensive global repository of spatial information on areas related to fisheries and stocks, encompassing biological distribution areas, assessment areas, statistical areas, and management areas. The database integrates official geospatial information provided by national authorities and international organizations such as Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFBs) and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs). Construction of the GRSF ADB relies exclusively on authoritative sources—including official maps, GIS portals, area coordinates, and official codes—which are subsequently harmonized through the geoflow framework to ensure compliance with GRSF Standards. The GRSF Areas Database serves as the foundation of the GRSF geospatial components, enabling the georeferencing and visualization of stocks and fisheries, supporting data alignment across source databases, and ensuring consistent spatial representation of fisheries related areas worldwide. Methods (English) The data management workflow was automated using the geoflow R package (available at https://github.com/r-geoflow/geoflow ) using the following steps Data sources compilation : GRSF Areas data sources were compiled in an harmonized data table following the standard DublinCore metadata model of geoflow. The inventory is available at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sm_QADBrshIeuqDuK9qQfy404NSxLEmFVjwoXVQ7dEw/edit?usp=sharing Processing : Each data source was processed using a R geoflow (configuration at https://github.com/GRSF/water_areas_geoflow/blob/main/config_grsf_water_areas.json ) to produced a set of standardized geopackages. Next, the set of geopackage were bundled all together. Areas that are not publishable (due for legal interoperability issues) were processed / simplified as bounding boxes. Other area polygons were post-processed (using a generalization algorithm) to harmonize the spatial resolution and minimize the spatial heterogeneity among data sources. The full dataset was exported as geopackage. Upload and publication : Geographic areas were published as geospatial layer in the FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture GeoServer (available at https://www.fao.org/fishery/geoserver ). Geographic information metadata is made available in the FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture GeoNetwork (available at https://www.fao.org/fishery/geonetwork ) and through the GeoInfo portal (available at https://www.fao.org/fishery/geoserver/geoinfo/ ) Files Restricted The record is publicly accessible, but files are restricted.
