The liver performs over 500 distinct physiological functions including glucose buffering, lipoprotein metabolism, plasma protein synthesis, bile acid production, and xenobiotic biotransformation. The pancreas provides both exocrine digestive enzyme secretion and endocrine glucose-insulin regulation through its acinar and islet cell compartments.
