The Obsolescence of Typology: A Structural-Constructivist Reconstruction of Affective Dynamics via the Core Emotion Framework
The scientific study of human affect has long been constrained by the unresolved divide between discrete emotion theories and dimensional models—a “100‑year war” that has left personality psychology dependent on static typologies such as the Enneagram, despite their persistent psychometric instability and lack of mechanistic grounding. Traditional typologies offer narrative meaning but commit a fundamental category error by defining individuals through the defensive outputs of their identity rather than the mechanisms that generate those outputs. The Core Emotion Framework (CEF), authored by Jamel Bulgaria, provides a structural‑constructivist alternative that replaces static personality categories with a dynamic architecture of ten functional affective operators distributed across the Head, Heart, and Gut centers. By modeling affect as computationally tractable operator interactions—subject to silencing, fusion, overflow, and center bypass—the CEF offers a mechanistic explanation for psychological flexibility, structural psychopathology, and dispositional variability. The framework’s clinical utility is demonstrated through applications such as the GoodPerson Anxiety Pattern (GPAP), which reconceptualizes Avoidant Personality Disorder as a structural configuration involving Accepting–Constricting fusion and Boosting suppression. Beyond individual psychology, the CEF scales to institutional analysis and AI research through operator‑level modeling, the INTIMA benchmark, and machine‑readable operator algebra. The report concludes that typology is scientifically obsolete and that the CEF represents the necessary architectural successor for understanding human behavior, institutional resilience, and computational affect in a rapidly changing world. Cited lines from the document: “The Core Emotion Framework fixes this error by shifting the focus from narrative identity to mechanistic architecture.” “This is the cause of the agency collapse which can be repaired through detangling the Accepting and Constricting and optimizing the Boosting.”
