The Geometry of the Self: A Structural Framework for Identity Integration, Psychopathology, and Therapeutic Translation
Current models of mental health treat trauma, anxiety, identity instability, personality rigidity, and social conflict as partially independent phenomena, each addressed by separate therapeutic traditions with largely distinct vocabularies. This paper proposes a structural framework in which these phenomena emerge from a single organizing geometry: the integration of bounded historical experience and open future possibility into a stable present identity. Within this framework the Ego functions as a normalization operator stabilizing a coherent identity center while navigating two opposing pressures: the weight of the past and the uncertainty of the future. Mental health is interpreted as successful navigation of this temporal axis. Psychopathology emerges when one pressure dominates beyond adaptive range: trauma collapses the operator backward, anxiety destabilizes it forward. The framework is introduced gradually. Section 3 presents a psychology-first operational map using entirely clinical terminology, allowing practitioners to recognize the organizing pattern in familiar terms. Structural markers are introduced in Section 4 only after domain familiarity is established, and their role as reference points rather than literal measurements is made explicit. Section 5 maps major therapeutic modalities onto the structural axis, showing that CBT, psychodynamic, somatic, and mindfulness-based approaches each address the same geometry from a different direction. Section 6 traces the framework across developmental stages. Section 7 notes alignment with known neuroscience. Section 8 addresses why psychological traditions, like other disciplines, have historically treated their own structural limits as unique rather than shared. This paper is conceptual and exploratory. It does not present clinical trial data. It proposes a structural lens that may support integration across therapeutic frameworks, improve communication between practitioners with different theoretical commitments, and generate testable hypotheses for future empirical work.
