The Widening Gap: Employment Opportunities for Workers with and without AI Skills in the Next 5 and 20 Years
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global labor market, creating measurable disparities in employment opportunities between workers equipped with AI skills and those without. This paper synthesizes recent evidence and proposes a causal chain explaining how AI diffusion translates into an observable employment gap over two horizons-the next 5 years (to 2030) and 20 years (to 2045). We integrate mechanisms for automation, augmentation, capital deepening, market concentration, reskilling capacity, regulatory speed, and cross-country diffusion gaps, and assign defensible node weights for their contributions to the gap in advanced economies by 2030. The model predicts net job growth amid pronounced skill mismatches, implying that policy urgency should center on reskilling, broad augmentation, and diffusion governance to reduce divergence.
