Toward a Reframing of the Hard Problem of Consciousness: Subjective Reality, Feeling, and the Origins of the Conceptual World
The hard problem of consciousness may be, in part, a problem of conceptual conflation: functionally distinct layers of mind are treated as a single phenomenon. This paper proposes a two-level framework that separates phenomenal presence from structured experience. It distinguishes Feeling-1 (F1), the minimal phenomenal presence of a state (the fact that something is experienced rather than merely processed), from Feeling-2 (F2), the structured, interpreted, and valenced organisation built upon that base. Drawing on neurological dissociations such as blindsight and pain asymbolia, the paper argues that F1 can occur without F2, but not vice versa. Consequently, much of what is traditionally bundled into the hard problem—meaning, emotion, value, and cultural interpretation—belongs to the tractable domain of F2. The hard problem is not eliminated, but precisely relocated to the narrower question of why any neural process acquires phenomenal presence at all. The framework generates empirically testable predictions and unifies evidence from dissociation studies, developmental neuroscience, and altered states of consciousness. Its aim is not to solve the hard problem, but to ensure that what remains unsolved is the right question.
