On the Scope and Limits of Metric-Based Interpretation in Cosmology
The standard cosmological model (ΛCDM) is commonly presented as a description of the history and structure of the universe. This paper examines the conceptual foundations of several key claims within this framework. The analysis identi es a distinction between what the formalism computes and what it describes: the model speci es consistency conditions within a mathematical framework, but the ontological interpretation of these conditions requires additional assumptions that are not themselves derivable from the formalism. Speci cally, we examine: (1) the interpretation of CMB isotropy as evidence for early universe homogeneity versus its status as a boundary of observational resolution; (2) the nature of cosmological singularities as extrapolation limits of the metric rather than physical events; (3) the conceptual status of universe age as projection depth rather than chronolog ical duration; and (4) the possibility that dark matter and dark energy may re ect artifacts of speci c metric assumptions rather than unambiguous indicators of distinct physical sub stances. This work does not propose an alternative theory or modi cation of general relativity. Its aim is purely conceptual: to examine the scope and conditions under which cosmological statements are well-de ned, and to distinguish empirical content from interpretive super structure.
