Abstract Cleanliness is a defining feature of modern human societies, deeply embedded in cultural, religious, and scientific practices. However, this emphasis on hygiene is conspicuously absent in natural ecosystems such as jungles or forests, where animals coexist with dirt, decay, and organic waste. This paper explores the evolutionary, environmental, and sociocultural factors that led to the rise of cleanliness as a human cultural value, and contrasts it with the ecological balance maintained in the natural world without similar concepts. The comparison highlights that cleanliness is a product of environmental pressures, symbolic thought, and cultural learning unique to human civilization.
