A CRITIQUE OF CONTEMPORARY ‘Loser’ Discourse Conditionalized Recognition, Reification, and Ontological Naturalization

This paper offers a critical analysis of contemporary ‘naturalized inferiority discourse’ — the pervasive cultural tendency to understand social failure in terms of natural inferiority. The central argument is that this discourse enacts a structurally determinate transformation: socially mediated recognition failure is translated into what is experienced as ontological deficiency. Drawing on Hegel’s account of mutual recognition as the ontological ground of self-consciousness, and Lukács’s concept of reification, the paper reconstructs the mechanism by which modern recognition structures — organized around objectified, ranked attributes such as physical appearance, capital, and social competence — produce this transformation. The analysis is organized around three structural claims. First, modern recognition structures have undergone a categorical shift from subject-to-subject recognition to attribute-mediated recognizability: persons are recognized not as free subjects but as bearers of ranked properties. Second, this shift generates structural exclusion as a logical feature of its architecture — not in all recognition structures, but specifically in those that distribute recognition according to ranked, continuously distributed attributes. Third, the resulting recognition failure is transformed, through reification and naturalization, into what is experienced as an ontological hierarchy of human worth — where naturalization is understood not as strict biologicalization but as the attribution of quasi-natural inevitability to a contingently organized social order. Two domains of contemporary Korean discourse — appearance discourse and romantic market discourse — serve as theoretical illustrations. The paper concludes that naturalized inferiority discourse functions not primarily as hate speech but as a systematic misrecognition: it substitutes a structurally produced recognition failure for a natural disclosure of the person’s intrinsic worth, and in doing so forecloses the structural critique that alone can adequately address it.
