Retention Is Not Closure: Implication-Unfolding Reasoning and the Limits of Preservation-Only Accounts
This paper argues that coherent reasoning is best understood as implication-sensitive branch selection rather than as local output emission or mere retention of historically successful patterns. Reasoning begins with a compressed claim whose implications are not yet fully explicit. What is commonly called chain-of-thought is better understood here as implication-unfolding reasoning: the progressive disclosure of the continuations, conflicts, and admissible developments already latent in an initial claim. This unfolding reveals a structural divide between retention-principles, which explain persistence, origin, and maintenance, and closure-principles, which explain why certain branches are valid, binding, or worth carrying forward independently of local preservation. Existing traditions already provide key ingredients for this picture: reasoning as model-based management of possibilities, communication as inferential coordination, and self-organizing cognition as uncertainty-sensitive regulation. The contribution of this paper is to show that, when followed far enough, implication-unfolding reasoning exposes a non-reducible gap between persistence and purposive validity. Frameworks centered on self-maintenance or historical selection can therefore explain continuity without thereby explaining non-indexical bindingness or purposive resolution. The paper concludes that any complete theory of reasoning, whether biological or artificial, must supply an account of closure in addition to retention.
