The Temporal Wave of Existence

philosophy
This paper proposes a philosophical and mathematical model of temporal experience. The central claim is that human existence is best understood not as a sequence of isolated moments but as a continuous physical process whose local phase is biologically experienced as the present. The model requires no universal cosmic present, no literal quantum collapse of time, and no physical transmission of information from the future. It proposes instead an access structure: biological organisms are localized systems with finite sensory ranges, finite processing speeds, memory-bearing records, and predictive models, and these constraints generate an experienced present out of a broader physical continuity. The core representation is E(t)=B[Ω_"local" ⓜ,(xⓜ,t)ⓜ,R(t) F ̂(t) ], where E(t) is the experienced present, B is the biological localization function, Ω_"local" (xⓜ,t) is the local physical state accessible to the organism, R(t) is the set of present records of prior states, and F ̂(t) is the projected future generated from present-accessible information. The paper distinguishes spatiotemporal, causal, process, and epistemic continuity; develops the body as a concrete instance of temporal continuity; formalizes records, projections, and biological weighting; and shows that the model can be stated without contradicting relativity, causality, thermodynamics, conservation laws, or quantum mechanics. The treatment of thermodynamics is developed in depth. Rather than invoking entropy as mere “disorder,” the paper grounds the model's temporal asymmetry in statistical mechanics (S=k_B ln⁡W), in the non-equilibrium organization of living systems, and in the irreversible physics of record formation. Biological localization is characterized as a non-equilibrium process, B_"neq", that can persist only while the organism sustains the thermodynamic gradients required for perception, memory, prediction, and action. The paper is careful to separate what thermodynamics does establish—the physical asymmetry that lets records of the past exist while records of the future do not—from what it does not, remaining neutral on cosmological endpoints such as heat death. The term “temporal wave” is used as a metaphor for temporally extended process-continuity; it implies no physical medium, new field, hidden substance, or single propagating entity beyond known physics. The defended claim is precise: the formula above can be stated as a local, causal, entropy-compatible, conservation-preserving, and non-invasive model of temporal access. In this sense the present is not the totality of reality, but the biologically localized interface through which an organism acts within reality.
