The AI Oversight Tax: Why AI Makes Work Look More Productive While Making Humans More Exhausted
This paper develops the concept of the AI Oversight Tax as a Structural Intelligence analysis of generative AI in the workplace. Its central claim is that AI makes output cheap while making trust expensive: emails, summaries, reports, code, decks, customer replies, and policy drafts can now appear finished before anyone has fully understood, verified, or taken responsibility for them. The paper distinguishes throughput from answerable productivity. Throughput measures how much material is produced; answerable productivity asks whether that material can survive contact with reality through questioning, consequence, recurrence checks, repair, and accountable ownership. The AI Oversight Tax names the hidden human labor required to make AI-generated output trustworthy enough to use: fact-checking, context repair, tone correction, risk detection, review fatigue, failure-path ownership, and responsibility absorption. The paper introduces several related concepts, including unearned output, trace laundering, developmental bypass, proof-of-work theater, and the human reviewer as hidden holder. It argues that AI adoption should be judged not only by speed and volume, but by verification cost, recurrence reduction, learning, repair, interrupt authority, and burden visibility. The contribution is philosophical and practical: a framework for evaluating whether AI genuinely improves work, or merely produces polished coherence while moving the cost of answerability onto humans.
