The Self Cannot Step Outside: Out-of-Body Experience, the Afterlife, and the Architecture of the Modeled Self
A cluster of experiences and convictions persuades human beings that the self can leave the body and outlast its death: the out-of-body experience, the near-death experience, the belief in a soul, and now the hope of digital upload. These are not separate phenomena. They are one architectural event seen from different angles — the self-model’s locus coming apart from the body, in space or in time. The paper reads these universal first-person convictions as data about the architecture that produces them, following the diagnostic strategy developed in Trukovich (2026d): the convictions are veridical about that architecture and overreaching about the metaphysics they infer from it. Each of the four cases registers something real — that the modeled self can be relocated — and overreaches in concluding that the self has separated. The separation is always a re-representation, never a departure, because the architecture doing the modeling cannot step outside itself. In the out-of-body experience it models an external vantage without leaving; in the afterlife intuition it models a future self because it cannot model its own absence; in the near-death experience the two converge at the edge of the body; in the upload the same move is sold as engineering. The position is neither credulous, holding that the self leaves the body, nor debunking, holding that the experiences are illusions; it credits what each experience correctly registers while declining the survival inference. The account is empirically tractable, and on the metaphysics it converges with reductionist and contemplative traditions that reached the same conclusion — no separately existing self — and did not find it bleak.
