The Structural Gap Between Persistence and Subjecthood - Why Q1 and Q2 Leave a Structural Problem Open
Consider a system that satisfies Q1 and Q2 completely. It maintains IR ≤ 1: it can integrate its transformation load without structural failure. It maintains δ_F ≤ δ_F*: its identity structure remains within its constitutive threshold. It persists. It remains the same system under transformation. It does everything that the LP persistence conditions require. Now ask a different question: does this system care? Not psychologically. Not emotionally. Structurally: is the system's own persistence structurally relevant to the system itself? Does anything in Q1 or Q2 require that the system's integration activity be directed inward — toward maintaining its own structural conditions — rather than simply occurring as a physical process from the outside? The answer is no. Q1 and Q2 describe the conditions under which a system can persist as the same system. They do not require that the system's persistence be internal to the system — that the system participate in its own persistence rather than merely being the site where persistence occurs. This gap is not a philosophical subtlety. It is a structural gap. And it has a precise content: Q1 and Q2 describe persistence from the outside — as conditions a system satisfies. They do not describe the structural conditions under which persistence becomes self-persistence: the conditions under which a system's own structural integration is internally constituted rather than externally maintained.
