This paper examines the relationship between moral values and self-referential ignorance — a condition in which individuals, groups, or institutions validate their beliefs primarily through internally reinforcing assumptions while dismissing contradictory evidence or outside perspectives. The central argument is that moral systems become epistemically and ethically dangerous when they lose the capacity for self-critique and external evaluation. Within such systems, moral absolutism, hypocrisy, tribalism, ideological extremism, and dehumanization emerge not as aberrations but as structural consequences of cognitive closure. Drawing from philosophy, psychology, sociology, political theory, and historical analysis, this paper explores how moral frameworks evolve from constructive ethical systems into closed ideological loops. Through historical examples including colonialism, totalitarianism, religious extremism, political polarization, and digital echo chambers, the paper demonstrates how self-referential moral structures contribute to social conflict and ethical decay. The paper engages critically with prior theoretical work — including epistemic closure, motivated reasoning, ideological totalism, and moral foundations theory — to clarify what the concept of self-referential ignorance distinctively contributes. It concludes by proposing solutions centered on intellectual humility, critical thinking, institutional accountability, and cross-cultural dialogue, while reflexively acknowledging the limits of these prescriptions.
