Between Assistance and Dependence: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Teaching Mathematics and its Effects on Student Learning A Case Study from Albanian Higher Education
Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have significantly influenced education, especially in mathematics teaching methods. This study argues that while AI tools provide valuable support to both students and university lecturers in Albanian higher education, they also pose risks of fostering dependence. By analyzing survey data from mathematics lecturers in Tirana, the research highlights key benefits and challenges of integrating AI into mathematics education. AI automates teaching tasks, but unregulated use may lead to overreliance, reducing students’ critical thinking and participation. The study emphasizes the need for regulation and targeted teacher training to ensure ethical and effective AI use in math education. Finally, careful and guided AI integration is crucial to support student learning without creating dependency.
