This paper develops a theoretical framework termed epistemic epigenetics—the interdisciplinary study of how environmental conditions shape cognitive structures that become psychologically, socially, and potentially biologically stabilized across time and generations. Central to this framework is the proposed construct of self-referential ignorance: a recursive cognitive condition in which individuals or groups interpret reality primarily through self-protective identity structures that resist contradiction, suppress disconfirming evidence, and reinforce existing belief systems. While self-referential ignorance is principally social, psychological, and epistemological in character, this paper argues that epigenetic mechanisms may indirectly contribute to its reinforcement through environmental conditioning of stress-response systems, emotional regulation circuitry, and neuroplastic adaptation. Drawing from behavioral epigenetics, cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, sociology of knowledge, and philosophy of mind, the framework is distinguished from existing constructs including motivated reasoning, identity-protective cognition, and cognitive dissonance by specifying its recursive, biologically reinforced, and multigenerational character. Historical case studies—including totalitarian conditioning, radicalization processes, and algorithmic echo chambers—are analyzed within this framework. The paper critically examines the contested evidence for intergenerational epigenetic transmission, proposes empirically grounded hypotheses for future research, and outlines environmentally oriented interventions emphasizing reflective education, emotional stability, and institutional design. The same biological plasticity that enables epistemic rigidity, it is argued, creates the conditions for deliberate epistemic transformation.
