Observation as Collapse: Why Psychological Measurement Is Structurally Impossible

philosophy
This paper argues that psychological measurement is structurally impossible because observation is not neutral—it is a constraint that collapses the system under study. Drawing from physics, development, social behavior, and technological environments, the paper shows that every act of observation reduces a distributed behavioral manifold into a narrower, stabilized pattern. Laboratory tasks, evaluators, recording devices, and even the expectation of being seen generate collapse conditions that reorganize identity and behavior. Replication failures arise not from methodological flaws but from the fact that different contexts impose different constraints, producing different collapse patterns. The paper proposes replacing object‑based measurement with pattern‑tracking, shifting psychology toward the study of transitions, trajectories, and constraint‑induced reorganization. Observation is not a window into the mind; it is a universal operator that alters what it seeks to measure.
