Historical Residue: The Sedimentation Bias Force of Dead Civilizations and the Dynamics of Why History Cannot Be Zeroed Out

Why do post-revolutionary societies always end up resembling the societies they overthrew? Why can civilizations dead for centuries be “rediscovered” and re-enter cultural accumulation? Why can archaeology reconstruct the structure of dead civilizations from residual traces? These phenomena point to a single mechanism: the sedimentation residue left by dead civilizations is not a passive relic but an active bias force. This chapter argues within a sedimentation field dynamics framework that the cross-generational co-nucleus residue of dead civilizations (δ_res^Civ) persistently biases the accumulation trajectory of successor social fields through its structural overlap with new co-nuclei. New social fields preferentially continue along the familiar pathways left by old civilizations because these directions carry lower cognitive friction — this is the structural reason why history cannot be truly zeroed out, not cultural conservatism or a metaphor for path dependence, but a necessary consequence of sedimentation dynamics. Three results follow. First, residual bias explains why post-revolutionary societies resemble their predecessors without being identical to them — residue provides initial directional bias, while other forces determine the final form. Second, residue has its own lifecycle, decaying differentially across cultural layers: ritual residue is the most persistent, value residue the most transient. Third, historical residue truly exits the dynamic system only when its structural overlap with every active social field approaches zero — an event that is historically extremely rare.
