General Relativity as a Cognitive Fold
General relativity is conventionally understood as a geometric theory of spacetime curvature sourced by matter-energy. This paper proposes an alternative interpretation grounded in the contological framework (C1–C5) and its mathematical topology companion. We show that: (1) special relativity emerges at the boundary between C2 (space as lattice) and C3 (matter as braids), with the invariant speed cc arising from topological constraints on exchange morphisms; (2) general relativity emerges at C4 (cognition as self-modeling subspaces), where curvature is the failure of global attention; (3) the Einstein field equations are derived from the consistency condition of a self-modeling subspace attempting to map its own boundary; (4) the Schwarzschild solution is reframed as a linking number problem in C2, with the mass parameter encoded by Qij=Lk(∂Si,∂Sj)Qij=Lk(∂Si,∂Sj). Key distinctions are drawn: photons are C2 excitations (pure exchange, no Fold 3 complexity), while electrons, muons, protons, and nuclei are C3 matter with non-zero fractal thickness. Curvature pre-exists in C2; matter probes resonate with it, with inertia and mass reinterpreted as measures of mismatch between Fold 3 thickness and local curvature gradient. Thus, general relativity is not a theory of spacetime—it is a cognitive fold: the necessary inconsistency between C2 (space) and C3 (matter), resolved by C4 (cognition) through curvature. Keywords
