Consciousness as Habitable Temporal Architecture
Contemporary theories of consciousness have generated powerful explanatory frameworks for understanding how distributed neural processes achieve coordination, integration, and functional accessibility. Yet these frameworks share a common limitation: they characterize primarily the conditions under which information is integrated or becomes functionally available, while leaving comparatively underspecified the structural conditions that make such integration experientially habitable. This paper proposes that the missing structural principle is regulated temporal discontinuity. Drawing on recent experimental findings concerning cortico-striatal integrator dynamics, it argues that conscious organization requires a dynamic regime in which signal flow is neither continuously homogeneous nor discontinuously fragmented, but discretely gated through threshold-mediated transitions that permit accumulation, interruption, reset, and release. The observed capacity of cortico-striatal circuits to pause, rewind, and reinitiate temporal accumulation provides an empirically grounded model of this architecture. These findings are interpreted through the conceptual framework of the Theory of Dynamic Habitability of Consciousness (THDC), which proposes that experiential coherence depends upon temporally regulated discontinuity rather than uninterrupted continuity. Implications for clinical neuroscience, artificial consciousness, and the reformulation of the explanatory problem of consciousness are discussed.
