A New Prisoner’s Dilemma: Do I Belong Here?

philosophy
The classic prisoner’s dilemma models how rational self‑interest can lead to mutual betrayal. This paper introduces a different dilemma: under what conditions can a prisoner – even one justly incarcerated – honestly answer “I belong here”? Drawing on the Noura framework of revealing‑form institutions (visibility, symmetry, contestability, repair), I argue that such an answer is possible only when society has restructured itself to enable flourishing for all. This requires (1) securing the material and cognitive requisites of flourishing, (2) providing adequate education for systemic literacy, and (3) shifting criminal justice from retribution to repair. I review empirical evidence on the structural causes of crime and present a Chinese restorative justice practice (“Blue Wind Chime”) as an example of revealing‑form logic at work. The paper concludes that a prisoner who achieves clarity – who sees their own causal responsibility and the fairness of a transparent, repair‑oriented institution – can genuinely say “I belong here,” not as submission but as an expression of informed agency.
