University of Toronto Description This paper argues that the growing difficulty of contemporary professional problems should be understood not only as a doctrinal or technological issue, but as an educational one. Many modern disputes now arise at points where multiple knowledge systems converge within the same decision space, including law, medicine, psychiatry, digital communication, and institutional governance. Yet higher education remains largely organised around disciplinary separation and preparation-oriented performance. Students are still more reliably trained to retrieve, summarise, analyse, and perform within bounded fields than to decide across converging ones. The paper develops this argument through the concept of interdisciplinary closure, defined here as the capacity to receive heterogeneous forms of knowledge, determine their institutional relevance, translate them into usable terms, control their boundaries, select an appropriate path of handling, and bring the problem to a bounded and accountable conclusion. On this account, the central weakness exposed by complex modern disputes is not simply lack of information, nor simply the limitation of AI, but the absence of systematic training in accountable closure under conditions of convergence. AI matters in this paper not as the primary target of criticism, but as a revealing surface: it makes visible an older educational misalignment between preparation and judgment. The paper further argues that interdisciplinary teaching does not require full mastery of every contributing discipline. A more realistic and teachable model is to train students to grasp selected first principles from adjacent fields and to learn how those principles can be connected, translated, and bounded within one professional problem. The paper concludes that professional education should not be rebuilt by dissolving disciplines, but by reorganising them around the realities of convergence, so that higher education can move beyond disciplinary fluency toward institutionally responsible judgment.
