Conne's Rigidity Theorem: Disproof of the Open AI and Anthropic Counterexamples (with Proposed Proof of the Conjecture)
We disprove the recent OpenAI, Anthropic, and Zhou "disproofs" by counterexample to Connes' rigidity conjecture, then show the same move proves the conjecture itself. Part I shows that three independent claimed counterexamples to the conjecture are invalid. The OpenAI and Anthropic counterexamples construct pairs of group extensions — one split (Gamma_0), one non-split (Gamma_tau) — of Sp_4(Z) by Z^4 and claim the corresponding group von Neumann algebras are isomorphic. The concurrent Zhou construction takes a different approach: two semidirect products Gamma_i = D semidirect_{theta_i} H sharing the same fiber and quotient but with distinct actions, and claims L(Gamma_1) isomorphic to L(Gamma_2) via Pontryagin duality. All three are invalid. The primary argument is a reductio ad absurdum that is purely mathematical: it does not rely on any semantic mismatch between code labels and mathematical objects, on whether the ICC or property-(T) certificates in the Lean code are valid or invalid, or on any code-level observation whatsoever. The argument assumes L(Gamma_0) isomorphic to L(Gamma_tau), equips both groups with Bernoulli actions (chosen by us, not inherited from either counterexample), and applies the twisted comultiplication and Ioana's classification (Theorem 8.2, JAMS 2011) to produce an injective group homomorphism delta_2: Gamma_0 into Gamma_tau. The Borel density theorem forces delta_2 to preserve the fiber Z^4; Margulis superrigidity forces an inner automorphism on the quotient Sp_4(Z); Schur's lemma forces a scalar map on the fiber; and the resulting cohomological identity alpha*[tau] = [tau] = 0 contradicts the non-vanishing of the Bockstein class (Proposition 3.5). By reductio, L(Gamma_0) is not isomorphic to L(Gamma_tau). The only inputs are the group-theoretic structure of Gamma_0 and Gamma_tau and the published theorems of Ioana, Borel, Margulis, and Schur. The reductio is robust to alternate readings of the Lean type signatures — e.g. taking the quotient to be a congruence kernel K = ker(SL_4(Z[t]) to SL_4(F_3)), the fiber modules to be F_2[t]-types, the CarryGroup law to produce exponent-4 torsion, or the shiftedCarry cocycle to be F_2-valued. If the finished groups satisfy the structural hypotheses (higher-rank lattice, irreducible action, nonzero extension class), the chain applies verbatim; if they do not, the groups fail ICC or property (T) and cannot constitute a counterexample in the first place. Independently of the reductio, the OpenAI formalisation exhibits three code-internal failures, each independently fatal: (i) a specification gap (the code constructs cocycle extensions D x_c K but verifies ICC using orbit arguments valid only for semidirect products D semidirect K); (ii) the zero-cocycle group has a nontrivial centre, destroying ICC; and (iii) the same group surjects onto an infinite abelian group, destroying property (T). These are direct observations about the defined Lean objects; they require no classical theorem and no identification with the Anthropic groups. The Zhou construction falls to the same reductio methodology. The subgroup D is the unique maximal abelian normal subgroup of both Gamma_1 and Gamma_2; any injective homomorphism delta_2: Gamma_1 into Gamma_2 must preserve it. The restriction to D must then intertwine the two H-module structures theta_1 and theta_2. But Zhou's own non-isomorphism proof (Section 6) shows that no such intertwining exists: theta_1 is semisimple while theta_2 is not. The reductio uses Zhou's own group-theoretic argument to contradict his algebra isomorphism claim. Part II proves the conjecture: every countable discrete ICC group G with Kazhdan's property (T) is W*-superrigid, L(G) isomorphic to L(H) implies G isomorphic to H. The proof is the same reductio, applied universally to any pair of ICC property-(T) groups — no shared sub
