Foundations for a Present-Centered View of Time in Contemporary Physics

The nature of time remains a profound challenge in physics. Relativity’s four-dimensional spacetime suggests a “block universe” where all events – past, present, future – equally exist, contradicting our experience of an unfolding now. Quantum mechanics, by contrast, introduces indeterminacy and wavefunction collapse that single out the present moment when possibilities become actual. Thermodynamics adds an “arrow of time,” distinguishing past from future via entropy increase, yet fundamental laws are time-symmetric. Cosmology confronts temporal boundaries: a Big Bang origin, a potential end of time, and horizons beyond which events seem inaccessible. We synthesize Existential Realism (ER) – a present-centric two-tier ontology – as a resolution framework that reconciles these puzzles without altering empirical predictions. ER posits that only the present exists (is concrete), while past and future remain real as structured but non-present aspects of the world. This simple distinction – existence vs. reality – yields a dynamic cosmos where events continuously migrate from real possibility to present existence and into real historical facts. We show how ER preserves Lorentz symmetry while restoring an objective becoming, aligns quantum physics with a single actual world (embracing collapse without “many-worlds”), grounds the thermodynamic arrow and causality in the accumulating record of the present, and provides a coherent picture of cosmological time-beginnings, endings, and information flow across horizons. Potential experimental implications are discussed, from quantum measurements to black hole observations. ER emerges as a rigorous yet intuitive ontology bridging physics and the lived experience of time, suggesting that time’s flow is no illusion but rather the lawful collapse, transition, and migration of reality into existence – one present moment at a time.
