Immanence Without Finality: On the Limits of the Deleuzian Defense of Amor Dei
This paper examines the limits internal to a Deleuzian defense of Spinoza’s Ethics. A prior analysis argued that adequacy, joy, and intellectual love do not authorize substance-level epistemic warrant within Spinoza’s own framework. A common response invokes Gilles Deleuze’s reading of Spinoza as a philosopher of pure immanence, rejecting juridical notions of authorization in favor of productive intensification on a plane of immanence. Granting this reframing in full, the present paper asks whether continuous immanent production can generate qualitative finality. The argument proceeds strictly within immanence and demonstrates that while intensification and stabilization occur within the modal order, no structural principle converts quantitative increase into ontological sufficiency. The result identifies a limit internal not only to Spinoza’s system but to its Deleuzian defense: finality does not follow from production alone.
