Consciousness and the Structure of Spacetime

philosophy
This essay develops a theoretical model of consciousness grounded in the interaction between real and imaginary light cones. Drawing on insights from relativity, quantum mechanics, and phenomenology, the model proposes that consciousness emerges from iterative transitions between actuality and potentiality. Imaginary light cones represent the space of possibilities, while real light cones embody manifest events. Iterative operator dynamics stabilize this exchange, in a manner reminiscent of the Quantum Zeno Effect and neurophysiological gamma oscillations. Philosophically, the model resonates with Aristotle’s actus and potentia, Bergson’s durée, Husserl’s temporal phenomenology, and Jung’s collective unconscious. By linking these traditions with modern physics—particularly Penrose’s twistor theory—it suggests that consciousness is not merely an epiphenomenon of neural complexity but a structural feature of spacetime itself: a continuous mediation between what is and what could be.
