The Broken Vessel: Identity, Suffering, and the Freedom of Kabir
This essay argues that identity is not a fixed essence but a stabilized process that becomes reified under evolutionary and existential pressures. While such reification enables coherence and survival, it also establishes the structural conditions for suffering: what is taken to endure must be defended against change, loss, and uncertainty. Through everyday examples, the essay shows how dynamic relations are compressed into fragile symbolic forms that harden under threat. It then turns to Kabir’s nondual vision, which dissolves this misrecognition and reveals identity as functional yet non-substantial. Kabir’s image of the “broken vessel” reframes loss as release, allowing identity to be understood as provisional and transparent rather than something to be secured. In this light, fragility becomes not a source of anxiety but a condition of openness, where life is lived as continuity rather than enclosure.
