Grounded in the Gongye Chang chapter of the Analects, this paper undertakes an in-depth philosophical reconstruction and offers a modern interpretation. With "the unbinding of the mind" as its central theme, the paper explores how Confucius guided his disciples to systematically break free from their various cognitive and spiritual attachments. The entire text is structured around the central thread of "breaking through attachments" (破执, pozhi), delving deeper with each layer. First, it challenges the stereotypical image of the junzi (gentleman), leading to a deeper understanding of the true meaning of "a gentleman is not a mere vessel" (junzi bu qi). Second, it guides us to overcome an over-reliance on self-identity labels. Third, through a differentiation of core concepts such as ren (benevolence) and zhi (wisdom), it clarifies the rigid mindsets that can arise in learning and the tendency toward simplistic judgments of others. Following this layered process of breaking through attachments, the paper returns to the fundamental method of self-cultivation: "the unity of mind and action" (xin xing he yi). From this, it introduces three realms of personal cultivation: "the state of having a self" (you wo), "the state of overcoming the self" (ke wo), and "the state of selflessness" (wu wo). Finally, the paper emphasizes that the practical path to realizing this state lies in the courage for introspection, as embodied in the concept of "inner self-examination" (nei zi song), and the tireless effort of "a love for learning" (hao xue).
