A Structural Criterion of Love
This article offers a focused application of structural pluralism to the phenomenon of love. It does not attempt to prove a new theorem equivalent in status to the formal result of No Self-Authorizing Norms. Rather, it presupposes that result: where a role both generates commitments and fixes the conditions of their correctness, judgment collapses into self-authorization. The present article asks what follows when this structural insight is applied to the intimate relation between a finite subject and another finite subject. The central claim is that Kantian anti-instrumentalization, while indispensable, is not sufficient as a criterion of love. The lover may refuse to use the beloved merely as a means and nevertheless absorb the beloved into the lover's need for continuity, rescue, confirmation, or protection against loss. Love therefore requires a stronger structural condition: the other's separateness and finitude must not be fixed by the lover's need. I call this condition non-possessive regard. Love does not defeat death; it prevents death from becoming erasure.
