On Counting - On Number, Proportion, and the Legible Life
To count is to promise that something will be remembered. This essay follows two numbers through scripture, cosmology, anatomy, and arithmetic — thirty-three, which recurs from the Kabbalists' count of the divine names to Dante's cantos to the segments of a developing spine, and forty-two, the encampments of the Exodus, housed inside the thirty-third chapter of Numbers. Set beside the golden ratio, thirty-three turns out to fall one short of a Fibonacci number, and the essay takes that gap as its subject: we are always the convergent and never the limit. It is candid about the danger of its own method, naming apophenia and the law of truly large numbers before the reader can, and it marks throughout which counts are checkable facts and which belong to a tradition. The conclusion is not that the numbers arranged anything, but that counting is a form of attention, and attention held long enough is a form of love.
