The Hard Problem as Structural Residue
This paper reframes the hard problem of consciousness not as a transcendent mystery intrinsic to consciousness itself, but as a **structural residue** that arises when we attempt to describe the boundary of observational structure in third-person language. Taking as its axis the asymmetry between "what appears as an object" and "the position from which it appears as an object," the paper demonstrates both the structural symmetry and the positional asymmetry between two kinds of explanatory boundary: the outer boundary (why does this universe exist?) and the inner boundary (why is there something it is like to have this experience?). It further explains why the problem of consciousness alone carries a distinctive existential urgency, locating this urgency not in any special ontological status of consciousness, but in the fact that the questioner is always already inside the question. Finally, the apparent self-referential problem—that this paper is itself written in third-person language—is resolved by distinguishing object language from metalanguage.
