Moral Order as Emergent Constraint: A Thermodynamic Analogy for the Expansion of Cooperative Boundaries

This paper proposes that morality is an emergent, higher-order expression of constraint dynamics structurally homologous to thermodynamic order formation. It argues that finite interacting systems require constraint to sustain local order against entropic drift. In biological and social systems, such constraint manifests as cooperative equilibria; in reflective agents, these equilibria are narratively encoded as moral norms. Morality is therefore neither reducible to physics nor separable from it, but represents a macroscopic order parameter emerging in systems capable of memory, foresight, and symbolic representation. Moral ‘progress’ is interpreted as expansion of the cooperative boundary under increasing systemic connectivity. The account provides a unified interpretation of moral intuition, tribalism, civilisational development, and the persistence of moral feeling without invoking either naïve reductionism or metaphysical dualism.
