Kito and the Scourge of Jungle Justice against Suspected Gay People in Nigeria: An Ethical Analysis
In Nigeria, the phenomenon known as “kito” has emerged as a disturbing form of targeted violence against individuals suspected of same-sex relationships. While sometimes framed as moral enforcement, kito has evolved into a system of organized abuse involving entrapment, assault, extortion, and, in extreme cases, death. This study provides a detailed ethical and socio-legal analysis of kito within the broader context of jungle justice in Nigeria. This study adopts a qualitative research methodology grounded in doctrinal legal analysis and ethical evaluation. It relies on secondary data drawn from legal documents, human rights reports, academic literature, and documented case accounts. Drawing on human rights reports, legal frameworks, and documented patterns of abuse, the paper argues that kito represents not moral discipline but a breakdown of law, social order, and ethical reasoning. It further examines the enabling conditions of legal repression, social stigma, and economic opportunism. The study highlights the role of activism and proposing practical recommendations for reform. The study concludes that any society that legitimizes violence in the name of morality risks destroying its own ethical foundations.
