Meaning as Emergent Integration: Toward a Cognitive-Existential Theory of the Meaning of Life

The question of the meaning of life is often approached through the language of purpose, value, happiness, morality, religion, or objective worth. While these approaches capture important dimensions of meaning, they do not fully explain how meaning actually arises in human consciousness. This paper argues that meaning is not a single object, property, or external answer given to life. Rather, meaning emerges when the self connects experiences, concepts, values, goals, and the world into a coherent and valuable whole. Meaning is therefore an emergent structure of integration: it gives importance, orientation, motivation, cognitive placement, and existential stabilization. The paper isolates cognitive placement—the positioning of the self within a field of value—as the dimension most often left implicit in existing accounts, and distinguishes it from the related but separate notion of coherence: coherence concerns whether a life makes sense, whereas placement concerns where the self stands within what makes sense. Situating the proposal against psychological triad theories, hybrid theory, and recent holist and sensefulness accounts, and defending it against objections from experiential detection, circularity, and inclusiveness, the paper proposes a cognitive-existential theory of meaning according to which meaning arises through the reconciliation of the subjective and the objective, closing the gap between the self and the world.
