The Coherence Threshold: _A Unified Dynamical Account of Consciousness_
This paper presents the unified formulation of the coherence threshold framework. Consciousness is described as a regime of physical organization that arises when internal restoration exceeds environmental disruption. This condition is expressed by the ratio R = λ_self / λ_env, referred to as the Porter Ratio. When R surpasses a critical threshold R★, system activity is retained, recirculated, and integrated within its own dynamics. Prior states remain active and come to shape future evolution, producing persistence, recursion, and interior time. This transition can also be expressed in terms of causal dependence, where P(S_t | S_(t−1), S_(t−2), …) > P(S_t | E_t), indicating that the present state becomes more strongly determined by the system’s own past than by external input. The same condition appears across physical systems as recirculation, including fluid eddies and internal reflection in optical systems, where activity is redirected into a bounded domain and repeatedly propagated. Coherence is defined as the sustained alignment of internal dynamics across time such that prior structure continues to participate in ongoing activity. Under constraint, internal dynamics act to reduce inconsistency while external disturbance introduces deviation. When restoration dominates disruption, coordinated structure emerges; when constraint pressure exceeds local resolution capacity, systems undergo global reorganization through structure-preserving transformations, expressed as s → −s, marking a transition between coherent regimes. Within this regime, persistence enables the reuse of previously stabilized structure. This process corresponds to exaptation in evolutionary systems, where structures arise under local conditions and later become integrated into new functions. The appearance of foresight arises from the retrospective visibility of compatibility once coherence allows integration. The same process governs perception and cognition, where patterns are generated and retained before they can be fully incorporated into a broader organization. Patterns that are partially aligned with existing structure are experienced as meaningful. Meaning corresponds to the felt registration of compatibility prior to full integration. When integration occurs, the system transitions into a more coherent state, producing the experience of insight. The sense that a pattern was already pointing toward its role arises from the fact that compatibility was present before its full expression became stable. As coherence increases, systems develop hierarchical temporal structure, integrate larger portions of prior activity, and form unified domains of internally coupled dynamics. From an external perspective, such systems can be described as maintaining structure under constraint. From within, the same process corresponds to the continuous availability of activity as it is sustained and integrated. This intrinsic aspect of sustained organization constitutes interior presence. The coherence threshold therefore defines both the emergence and development of consciousness. Consciousness is the operation of a system whose activity remains continuously available within its own dynamics across time.
