This paper develops a structural analogy between Plotinus’ hierarchy of the One, Nous, Psyche, and Nature and a contemporary model of constructed subjectivity. The One is reinterpreted as a minimal, pre-conceptual Source or Bare Presence; Nous as unconscious generative structure; Psyche as conscious subjectivity and mediation; and Nature as the model-dependent construction of perceptual experience. Drawing on Plotinus, Pierre Hadot, and contemporary work on unconscious cognition and constructed perception, the paper argues that the analogy preserves relations of dependence, mediation, unity-in-multiplicity, and descent from less differentiated to more articulated levels. It also marks decisive departures. Plotinus’ hierarchy is cosmic, ontological, axiological, and teleological, whereas the proposed model is individual, epistemic, psychologically descriptive, and fallible. The reinterpretation therefore does not claim that Plotinus anticipated cognitive science. It uses a modern framework to test how far Hadot’s reading of Plotinian levels as levels of inner life can be extended while keeping historical doctrine and contemporary analytical use distinct.
