Qualia as Excitations: A Field-Based Symmetry Between Quantum Fields and Consciousness

philosophy
Quantum fields are not directly observed as standalone entities but inferred from their measurable excitations and predictive formalism, yet widely accepted because their excitations (particles, interactions, vacuum effects) are measurable and their equations predict those effects. This paper argues that the same inference pattern justifies taking a consciousness field—central to Consciousness Structured Field Theory (CSFT)—as real: qualia are its excitations. Anticipating the primary critique (“qualia cannot be measured like particles”), we show that physics already accepts unseen fields on the basis of effects, not direct inspection. We articulate a parity-of-reasoning argument, outline a research program for formalism, and specify what would count as progress without overclaiming. My conclusion: the universality and indubitability of qualia provide prima facie grounds to infer a consciousness field, pending formalization and empirical constraint.
