EU, You're Gonna Miss That Plane
Author's note. This essay moves beyond the general problem of adaptation to examine a distinctive historical case. The European Union was not simply another successful actor. It was an actor that once imagined itself as a future pole. That history fundamentally changes the nature of its contemporary dilemma. EU, You're Gonna Miss That Plane Cong Nguyen June 2026 Abstract. Although framed through Europe, this essay is ultimately about the fate of a historical ambition under changing structural conditions. It asks what happens when prosperity, integration, and institutional success no longer necessarily produce strategic autonomy. Combining personal memory, European history, cinematic references, and geopolitical analysis, the essay traces the passage from an era that believed it had transcended history to one in which history has unmistakably returned. While it stands on its own, it also forms part of a broader research project examining how different actors adapt as the international system becomes progressively more constrained. #nmctheory #nmcoped
