Hans-Georg Lundahl answers The Spirit in the Closed Circuit by insisting that two questions were improperly mixed: what a Catholic should do with a personal prompting, and how one should assess Catholicism's truth or authority. The questions are indeed distinct. The paper explicitly distinguished them. Its central claim was that Lundahl's procedure may guide action inside Catholicism without identifying the source of an impression or establishing Catholic authority. Lundahl's new reply therefore concedes the practical half of the analysis while leaving the epistemic half unanswered. His appeal to a community's memory of its origins may support limited confidence that some ordinary facts were preserved; it does not bridge the gaps from community tradition to narrative accuracy, from narrative accuracy to miracle, or from miracle to uniquely Catholic divine authorization. Nor does public criticism of a public truth claim amount to surveillance or control of private conduct. Lundahl is free to act from Catholic priors. The remaining question is how much credence the offered evidence warrants in those priors and their supernatural conclusions.
