This paper draws upon Laozi’s philosophy of “Wuwei governance” (governing by non-interference) to reexamine the essential nature, purpose, and governance of the university. In an age when modern higher education is increasingly plagued by bureaucratization, instrumentalization, and ideological manipulation, the author argues that the true university must return to the principle of “Dao follows Nature”, enabling both academic and moral development to follow their intrinsic logic. By comparing Chinese and Western (particularly American) university systems, the paper reveals that universities should not become mere subsidiaries of the state, factories of the market, or tools of ideology. Rather, the university must serve as a platform for civilization’s self-reflection, purification, and transcendence—a sanctuary for truth, dignity, and intellectual freedom. Only by restoring the spirit of Wuwei can we rebuild the soul of the university—and, through it, the future of humanity.
