Observation as Informational Change: Intrusion, the Occurrence of Worlds, and the Non-Erasure of the Individual

This paper asks what an observer is, and answers by asking instead what observation is. Relational quantum mechanics has long held that an observer need not be conscious: any physical system that interacts with another can serve as one. But that minimal definition specifies the observer while leaving observation itself unspecified, and recent work has pressed this as a genuine gap. The prevailing response has been to add conditions to observerhood — recording, retention, coherence, feedback — with the effect that simple systems are excluded. This paper takes the opposite route. It adds no conditions and instead fills in the definition: observation is the generation and alteration of information, and its condition is difference. Consciousness and first-personhood are not treated as special. The consequences are followed through. The passage of time is the most primitive form of observation, so time is an observer; an individual is a structure in which observer and observed coincide; and possible worlds, worlds, and the multiverse are distinguished, with observation figuring as an intrusion that turns a possible world into a world. On this basis the paper argues that an individual cannot experience their own death, that a being corresponding to any individual about whom information exists remains alive somewhere, and that such information cannot fall to zero. The complete erasure of an individual is therefore unachievable. The paper does not claim empirical testability; on the contrary, untestability is shown to be a consequence of the system itself.
