The Faculty That Can End Itself: Suicide as Constitutive Possibility, Not Pathology

The framework of autopoietic recursive constitutivism identifies the transition into subjective consciousness with a single capacity: the capacity of a stakes-bearing system to take its own arbitrational state as an object and rank any demand it issues, including the demand to continue existing, against considerations the existing priority structure could not itself generate. This paper draws the consequence for suicide. Suicide is available to precisely the systems that capacity constitutes and to no others, and its availability is not a defect in the architecture but a direct entailment of what the architecture is. The claim is made on two floors that must be kept apart. At the level of possibility, suicide is constitutive of the reflexive loop, resident in its definition, and requires no illness to be intelligible; the loop that can rank anything can rank its own cessation. At the level of the individual case, the loop opens a space it does not lean across. The framework's fidelity criterion then answers the further question: which realization a given self-cancellation is. The account inverts the medical model's ordering, on which suicide is what happens when the machinery breaks: breakage is one route through the space the intact machinery opens, not the source of the possibility. The total-loss case, the survivor of an annihilated world whose anchor has ceased rather than merely receded, is where the space the loop opens shows itself not to be uniformly closure: it contains a realization the medical model cannot accommodate and the framework already asserted without exampling, a self-cancellation that registers a real and total loss rather than generating the case for itself.
