The Black Iceberg: A Diagnostic Framework for Epistemic Collapse and Moral Desynchronization

Why do societies that the standard instruments of crisis analysis judge to be alike go on to follow radically different paths? Weimar Germany and the United States met the same Depression with comparable measures of structural stress and opposite fates; the late Soviet Union and present-day Russia share a moral configuration yet travel in opposite epistemic directions. This work offers a diagnostic framework built to discriminate where the standard instruments cannot. Its central concept is the Black Iceberg: the moment at which a society's organizing seeming truth, long held while quietly disbelieved, collapses into mutual recognition through a cascade of latent knowledge into common knowledge. We distinguish two types of this event — one triggered from without by an external shock, one from within by the slow exhaustion of a society's carriers of functional holding, the depleted pool — and we read each society through two independent instruments applied in parallel: a Moral Plane with four quadrants of conscience, and a four-position Reality Matrix understood in the Platonic and Aristotelian senses of the real and the true. The framework is demonstrated across four cases — Weimar, the late Soviet Union, post-Soviet Russia, and communist China — and yields eleven further, falsifiable implications. For each central claim we state the conditions under which it would be refuted, turning the framework from a universal explanation into a falsifiable one. Its support here is retrospective; the decisive test lies in the prospective application the work invites.
