The Death of Verification. Sapere aude!

Empirical verification—the foundation of scientific epistemology—collapsed as a distributed capacity between 1945 and the present through three cascading failures: information filtration (language barriers, publication bias, corporate capture), individual inaccessibility (economic/time constraints, learned helplessness, corpus explosion), and institutional complexity (infrastructure monopolies, misaligned incentives, computational opacity). Throughout this paper, “verification” does not mean procedural review, institutional endorsement, expert consensus, or secondary reanalysis of institutionally produced data. It denotes the capacity to materially reproduce the underlying phenomenon or generate equivalent empirical evidence through direct interaction with the target system without requiring access to proprietary infrastructure, data, or authorization controlled by the institution asserting the claim. When this capacity disappears, knowledge claims become epistemically indistinguishable from authority — even if produced by competent, well-intentioned experts. For 99% of knowledge consumers, modern science operates epistemically analogously to pre-Reformation theology: acceptance based on institutional authority without verification capacity. Social sciences face additional degradation through theory-empiricism divorce and terminological inflation. We propose epistemic vigilance as a navigational framework for this permanent condition. **Keywords:** empirical verification, institutional analysis, institutional capture, epistemology, information filtration, replication crisis, hermeneutic loop
