Mental Concepts and Scientific Theory Construction
Mental concepts such as consciousness, belief, and intention are commonly employed in scientific theories of mentality. However, discussions in consciousness science often seek to justify these concepts by appeal to ontological assumptions about what mental phenomena ultimately are. Such approaches address questions that are distinct from the construction of scientific theories. This paper argues that the construction of scientific theories should be evaluated independently of prior ontological commitments. It also argues that the scientific significance of mental concepts depends on their theoretical roles within explanatory and predictive frameworks. The paper distinguishes three general strategies for incorporating mental concepts into scientific theories: identity, reduction, and hybrid models. To clarify their methodological basis, it examines successful examples of scientific identity and reduction from chemistry and thermodynamics. The analysis suggests that neither identity relations nor reductions, considered in isolation, are sufficient to justify the scientific role of theoretical concepts. Rather, both presuppose broader theoretical frameworks within which concepts participate in explanatory and predictive structures. Building on this observation, the paper examines theories that introduce mental concepts as theoretical components. Two minimal conditions are proposed: well-definedness and theoretical contribution. These conditions are presented as prerequisites for the scientific assessment of theoretical concepts. The paper argues that the central issue is not merely how mental concepts relate to physical, neural, or functional descriptions but also how they acquire meaningful roles within scientific theories.
