On the Variational Origin of Physical Existence

This work addresses the question of physical existence at a logically prior level to dynamics, spacetime structure, and empirical modeling. Physical existence is not assumed as a primitive notion, nor identified with empirical detectability, but is derived from a variational criterion of admissibility. A configuration is said to exist physically if and only if it corresponds to a stable stationary solution of a closed variational functional. Within this framework, existence is identified with variational stability rather than with causal efficacy, observation, or phenomenological persistence. The analysis establishes a strict separation between mathematical possibility, physical admissibility, and empirical manifestation. Physical entities, laws, and scales do not pre-exist the variational criterion; they emerge exclusively as invariants of admissible stationary configurations selected by variational closure. The resulting picture inverts the standard epistemic hierarchy of physics. Dynamics, interactions, and measurement presuppose existence and cannot define it. Experiments do not determine what exists, but operate within the space of configurations already admitted by the variational criterion. Apparent experimental contradictions therefore signal a mismatch between experimental interpretation and admissible structure, not a failure of the underlying framework. The variational origin of existence presented here yields a non-arbitrary, self-consistent criterion that eliminates the need for phenomenological patches, external ontological assumptions, or ad hoc selection principles. Physical reality is identified with the set of variationally stable configurations, while non-admissible configurations are excluded by construction. In this sense, the framework provides a foundational account of physical existence as a consequence of stability, rather than as a postulate of theory or observation.
